I started this blog in October 2009 while working on a project for an Australian IT company that involved identifying new technology trends. There is no shortage of news about cloud computing, but I couldn’t find any blogs or directories focused on the pure play cloud computing companies. There is much discussion about the vague idea of ‘”clouds” that includes everything from iTunes to hosted email. So I thought I’d plug the gap.
I’ve been writing about technology since 1984, covering everything from the first laptops to the first generation of search engines. (My comparative test of search engines was published in the May 1996 Internet World).
I got to be pretty good at spotting trends while I was at PC Magazine. I created the Pipeline column to identify R&D that would turn into product. (A number of those articles have been cited in patent filings.)
With CloudyNews.com, I will do what I’ve done for many years now: help buyers of technology understand their choices and try to spot new directions. And, of course, avoid mistakes.
The directory will be “pure” and list only companies that are offering something truly based on cloud principles, avoiding companies claiming to have added a “dash of cloud” to their otherwise traditional product mix. It is not a list of cloud-based services — this is a list of the tools you can use to build and manage your own cloud computing environment.
I hope to turn it into a comprehensive directory; right now, it is evolving and I am open to suggestions on the best way to organize it. And any other feedback, too, on the commentary in the blog portion.
If I’ve helped you, please subscribe to the RSS feed and my Twitter feed where I will tweet all new posts to the blog, plug whatever else comes up.
